Fang Junbi was born in Fuzhou in 1898, in a wealthy and progressive family opponent of the imperial regime. His brother battled to death during the Canton uprising. Following the 1911 Revolution, Fang Junbi and her sister travelled to France in order to study. Fang Junbi joined the Académie Julian and the École des Beaux-Arts where she discovered the Western culture. The following year, she returned to China but kept serious bonds with France by becoming a member of Salon des Tuileries in 1928. Back in her native country, while exploring traditional Chinese Masters, she applies Western technique modeling. This effort to reunite both aesthetics, European know-how and Chinese iconography, is particularly highlighted in the portrait of l’Enfant Endormi.
