There is proof of the existence of gospel books from the 6th century on. The Bible was divided into several volumes for ease of transport, greater readability for liturgical use and, above all, the possibility of creating "exegetical chains" of passages chosen from the commentaries or homilies of the Churches Fathers. This manuscript is written in three hands: majuscule for the headings, minuscule (increasingly popular during the 10th century) for the Biblical text, and joined cursive; the two fine illuminations of Luke and Mark are proof of the revival of Byzantine illumination after the final defeat of the iconoclastic movement in the 9th century.
