For Martin Bodmer, Shakespeare represented the pinnacle of world literature. Thus, he was delighted to acquire the former Rosenbach collection of extremely rare and valuable editions of Shakespeare, in 1952. Today, Cologny owns the largest collection is Shakespeareana outside of England and America. SInce no autograph manuscript or edition authorized by the author has been preserved, each edition is an important piece of textural evidence. Only a few plays were published in quarto during Shakespeare's lifetime and of these, most are incomplete, riddled with errors and often based on notes taken during the performances. Seven years after the playwright's death, two of his actor friends, John Heminge and Henry Condell, published the complete First Folio edition.
